Dog Insurance Travel Tips

Posted on 23 September 2009 by

If you are a dog owner then you will know only too well how much they loveĀ  a car journery or two but keeping them safe and well while they are on the move is a specialist discipline! Here we look at ways to keep your dog happy when on the move, including the value of a good dog insurance policy.

While your dog may love nothing more than sticking its head out of your window the fact is that some dogs get travel sickness and the good news is that there are several things you can do to help them recover quickly.

It can be a good idea to get them in a car as soon as possible after birth as this will help them get used to the environment. Just sot them in the car for a few minutes without it moving to begin with and slowly build up to a long journey. Just be sure that your puppy has an empty stomach and has had the chance to toilet before getting into the car and it can be a very good idea to get some specialist dog insurance cover before trying this technique out, just in case something goes wrong. Most puppies, like most children, outgrow carsickness. In the interim, doing the right things can minimise messes, limit nervousness, and shorten the time it takes for your dog to learn that car rides can be a lot of fun.

Of course, once your dog becomes accustomed to trvale in your car then you need to start thinking about safety and that all starts with covering your dog with a good insurance policy in case you have an accident – as he or she will not be covered by the NHS!

The first thing you must curtail is the dog causing accidents in the first place by jumping up on your lap or under your feet while you drive. Your dog needs to be sat in a pet carrier or restrianed in the boot behind a dog guard to be safe.

A travel cage is suitable for most dogs and is often the most popular method of dog transportation although you can also purchase special dog harnesses that act a little like seatbelts.

If you are unfortunate enough to have a crash whilst your dog is in the car, quickly try and calm your dog down by taking the carrier to a quiet place. You must obviosuly be very careful when doing this to ensure that any injuries are not made worse and you should quickly contact you nearest vet, or the one suggested by your dog insurance company to get them checked over. You should also check that your dog is covered by his insurance for car accidents as not all insurance polcies will cover this.
