Pets are great companions and can often play a fundamental role in family life. Owning a pet can help children to learn a sense of responsibility as well as providing a fun and loving relationship for the whole family.
Before you make the all important decision to own a pet have a think about the following questions:
- If you have children, consider if they are old enough to fully understand the responsibilities involved in looking after a pet.
- Are you and your family prepared to care for the animal for years to come? The excitement of a new pet often wears off quickly but a pet can live for up to 20 years!
- Do you have enough space for your new pet? This is especially important of you are considering owning a large dog.
- How much spare time do you have to devote to your new pet? Pets require regular feeding, grooming and exercise – be sure you have the time and the energy to care for your pet properly.
- Do you go away often or work long hours? Think about who will look after your pet when you go away.
- Do you have the money to care for a pet? Some pets are more expensive than others, for example a pedigree dog will be much more expensive than a mixed breed cat but both will need food, bedding, toys, grooming and of course trips to the vet.
